Yeah, sorry Dan - I didn't mean to ask if there was a way of bypassing paying for the service but still getting it. I'm looking to replicate what the $99/yr service would get me, just doing it myself. My thought would be hacking the iphone app to send the request straight to my home, rather than going through C4's service and in through their client. Does that make sense? I realize that the 4sight service does other valuable things, but if possible, I'd love to eschew the paid route as much as possible. I think you are asking if you can control your system, through your iPhone while you are away from home, without having to sign up for 4sight.

The short answer is yes. You can simply forward a port to your controller and have your iPhone app connect to your public ip address. There are some caveats though. The iPhone app can only take in hard coded ip addresses.

This means you can't use dynamic dns addresses. You run the risk of opening up your controller to the world.

While there are more attractive targets than messing with someone's c4 controller, it is still a risk. One time, while I was google-ing, I ran across someone's home controller that was exposed to the world. 90/496/cee. I was so tempted to log in and turn off/on his lights. There are other options such as setting up a VPN server in your home and connecting to that via iPhone's built in VPN client, then using the app to control your home.

Much more secure and you can use dynamic dns names. However with all of that said, you will still need to pay the one time license cost of the MyHome iPhone app. I'm not looking for a way of having 4sight without paying C4 for it, I mean. I just wanted to be clear I wasn't looking for a way to hack their service or pirate it in any way. I was looking for functionality where I could simply remote into my home system through my public ip with forwarded ports, and replicate the control the way that C4's 4sight does it. Sorry to be unclear.

Thanks for your response! I'll keep looking. AJ Okay, well then that makes sense. I thought you were asking about duplicating the email functionality or something. I don't use 4Sight for remote control. I just use LogMeIn to connect to one of my PC's, and then I use the Flash Navigator interface on the PC. It is fast, and slick.

I have Log Me In Ignition on my cell phone and my XOOM, plus any computer with internet access can log in. That is my solution, I feel it is too cumbersome to login to my.control4.com, wait for the thing to load, etc. I don't use 4Sight for remote control.

Trying to log in via my iPhone on the Edge-only network so I can turn the lights on as I drive home is virtually impossible. But even from Dallas on my 12Mbps U-Verse, it's painfully slow. Bow wow price of fame zip. I've thought about your other approach, but how is the response time on it?

Are the screen updates so minimal that it's fast? Doing that would force me to upgrade to 2.0 -- I may have to break down do that in the next year or so. Can anyone please explain how to do this in detail or share a link or info on how I would set this up? Please and ty in advance. VPN setup is dependent on your router. Your router may or may not support a VPN server. If it does then consult your routers installation guide on how to setup.

Once it is setup then configure your iOS or Android device to connect to the VPN and just open up your Control4 app. To fully replicate 4sight you will also need email and push notifications for when events happen in your home (eg security system alarm).
